The first source of heat loss in hot air coffee roasting machines comes from the exhaust air. After leaving the roasting chamber, the exhaust air is channeled through a heat exchanger. The heat exchanger is the brain of a heat recovery system and is usually installed externally and connected to the roasting machine. It works by pulling thermal energy from the exhaust and transferring it to incoming fresh air, without letting the two air streams mix.
This means that only the heat is transferred to the incoming air, while smoke, chaff, moisture, and other by-products remain in the exhaust stream and continue through the exhaust system.
The recovered heat warms the incoming air before it reaches the burner or heating system. Because the air is already partially heated, your machine only needs less energy to bring it to the desired roasting temperature for the next batch.
One thing you should know: A heat recovery system is different from an afterburner, even though they work with exhaust air. An afterburner’s main function is to break down harmful compounds in the exhaust air before it’s released into the atmosphere.
That said, there is one type of afterburner that does include a built-in heat exchanger to recover heat. It’s called a recuperative afterburner. So after oxidizing the harmful compounds, it then captures the thermal energy and uses it to preheat incoming air.
One of the most noticeable benefits is lower energy consumption, as the burner or other heating systems require less energy to reach the desired roasting temperature. The machine can operate more efficiently and may lower fuel and electricity bills over the long run.
